Description of idea:
What would you say, given a free minute of anonymous, uncensored speech? One Free Minute is a mobile sculpture designed to allow for instances of anonymous free speech. Callers to the cell phone inside One Free Minute hear a brief explanatory message and are then connected to its 200-watt speaker system. The speech produced by the system can be heard within about 150 feet of the sculpture. Visitors to www.onefreeminute.net can also leave speeches, in the form of MP3’s, emails and voicemails, which are saved and broadcast at future performances. One Free Minute uses the same electronic and networked technologies that have diminished our notion of public space to reclaim community, free speech, public discourse and interaction. One Free Minute has applications both as an exploration of free speech and as a screen of anonymity for activists.
